The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) has named the North Dakota Board of Nursing (NDBON) as the recipient of the 2022 Regulatory Achievement Award. This distinguished honor recognizes a member board or associate member for making significant and identifiable contributions to NCSBN’s mission of promoting public policy that ensures the safe and effective practice of nursing in the interest of public welfare.
The NDBON’s long-standing commitment to public protection through innovative public policy and legislation has established it as a leader in nursing regulation. By embracing a global perspective, the Board actively supports and empowers nursing regulators worldwide to fulfill their shared mandate of protecting the public. Through its efforts, the NDBON has developed and implemented licensing and regulatory policies that align with NCSBN’s strategic initiatives.
Board members, leadership, and staff have contributed extensively to NCSBN’s mission, including serving on and chairing committees, presenting at conferences, and supporting fellow regulatory agencies. These efforts underscore the Board’s unwavering dedication to advancing nursing regulation on both state and international levels.
North Dakota’s leadership extends to historic achievements in nursing regulation. The state was the first to pass legislation enacting the new APRN Compact, a key milestone in advancing advanced practice nursing. Furthermore, the NDBON demonstrated its commitment to public safety by forming a tri-regulator council with the state’s Board of Medicine and Board of Pharmacy, fostering collaboration on regulatory, legislative, and policy initiatives.
In response to the profound challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and other public health emergencies, the NDBON partnered with regulatory colleagues to develop an Alternative to Discipline Program for nurses. This program addresses critical needs by offering resources and support to healthcare professionals in crisis. Additionally, the Board’s collaboration with local healthcare organizations ensures ongoing access to these essential resources.
North Dakota is also one of only five boards of nursing recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a specialized accrediting agency, further highlighting the Board’s commitment to regulatory excellence.
With its steadfast dedication to public protection and a reputation for “right-touch” regulation, the North Dakota Board of Nursing exemplifies leadership and innovation in nursing regulation.
